Great Gardens and Outdoor Experiences near Siesta Key

From tropical gardens and flamingos to canopy walks, wildlife preserves and peaceful waterfront trails, some of Sarasota’s best experiences happen away from the sand.

Siesta Key may be best known for its beaches, but you don’t have to travel far to discover another side of the Sarasota area.

Just minutes from the Key are lush botanical gardens, Old Florida landscapes, wildlife habitats and preserves where you can spend a few hours — or an entire day — outdoors.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing garden stroll, something fun to do with the kids, a place to spot Florida wildlife or an outdoor adventure that feels completely different from the beach, these are some of our favorite places to explore.

1. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens – Downtown Sarasota

If you only visit one garden while staying on Siesta Key, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens should be high on the list.

Located along Sarasota Bay, the Downtown Sarasota campus is a beautiful 15-acre tropical oasis filled with orchids, bromeliads, rainforest plants, native Florida landscapes and waterfront pathways. Selby is especially well known for its collection and study of epiphytic plants — plants such as many orchids and bromeliads that grow on other plants rather than in the ground.

One of the best things about Selby is that it feels equally suited to couples, families and anyone simply looking for a quiet afternoon away from the beach.

Why we love it: Tropical plants, beautiful photography spots and Sarasota Bay views all in one place.

Good for: Couples • Families • Garden lovers • Photography • Relaxing afternoons

Location: 1534 Mound Street, Sarasota

Selby's Downtown and Historic Spanish Point campuses are currently open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; checking current admission and special exhibitions before visiting is a good idea.

For a garden experience that feels completely different from downtown Selby, head south to Marie Selby Botanical Gardens' Historic Spanish Point Campus.

Spread across approximately 30 acres along Little Sarasota Bay, Historic Spanish Point combines native Florida landscapes with thousands of years of local history.

Visitors can wander trails and boardwalks while learning about the area's early inhabitants, pioneer families and the Palmer legacy.

It feels less like a traditional manicured botanical garden and more like stepping into Old Florida.

Seasonal experiences may also include tours and opportunities to get out on the water aboard Magic, a replica pioneer-era boat.

Why we love it: It's part garden, part nature preserve and part Sarasota history lesson.

Good for: History lovers • Nature lovers • Couples • Families • Scenic walks

Location: 401 N. Tamiami Trail, Osprey

If you're traveling with kids — or you just want to get surprisingly close to a flamingo — Sarasota Jungle Gardens is one of the area's classic attractions.

The 10-acre property combines tropical landscaping and winding walking trails with more than 200 native and exotic animals. Its most famous residents are the free-roaming pink flamingos, which visitors can walk among and feed.

You'll also find parrots, reptiles and other rescued wildlife along with regularly scheduled animal presentations.

It's been part of Sarasota since 1939 and still has a wonderfully quirky Old Florida roadside-attraction feel.

Why we love it:Where else can you take a tropical garden walk and suddenly find yourself surrounded by flamingos?

Good for: Kids • Families • Animal lovers • Rainy-ish days • Photos

Location: 3701 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota

Want to see what Florida looked like long before condos, hotels and beach roads?

Head inland to Myakka River State Park.

The Myakka River winds through wetlands, prairies, hammocks and pinelands in one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks. Wildlife sightings can include alligators, turtles, osprey and countless other birds. Visitors can hike, bike, paddle, fish or simply drive through and stop at scenic overlooks.

One of its most memorable attractions is the Canopy Walkway, which gives visitors an elevated view of the surrounding landscape.

This is the place we'd recommend when someone says:

“We've done the beach. Show us real Florida.”

Why we love it:It's a completely different world from Siesta Key — yet close enough for an easy day trip.

Good for: Adventure • Wildlife • Hiking • Birding • Photography • Families with older kids

Location: 13207 State Road 72, Sarasota

Take a Siesta Key Tip: Bring water. Florida State Parks currently notes that potable drinking water is temporarily unavailable inside the park, although bottled water is available at the ranger station.

The name may not sound particularly exciting. The experience is.

The Celery Fields is one of Sarasota's best places for birding, wildlife watching and a surprisingly great view.

The former agricultural area has been transformed into hundreds of acres of wetlands and wildlife habitat. More than 10 miles of trails wind alongside ponds and marshes, while boardwalks extend into the wetlands. You can also climb the observation hill for a panoramic view — something that's unusually hard to find in famously flat Florida.

More than 250 bird species have been recorded in the area, making it one of Sarasota's premier birding destinations.

And here's another bonus:

Admission is free & it's pet friendly.

Why we love it:It's peaceful, inexpensive and one of the best places around Sarasota to watch sunrise, birds and wildlife.

Good for: Birding • Walking • Photography • Nature lovers • Budget-friendly outings

Location: 6799 Palmer Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34240

If you'd like something a little quieter than Myakka, consider Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey.

The 1,400-acre park protects important Florida scrub habitat and offers approximately 15 miles of trails. It's particularly known as habitat for the Florida scrub-jay, a bird found nowhere else in the world.

You can also hike, bike, fish or paddle along South Creek, and the park connects nicely with the nearby Legacy Trail for cyclists.

Why we love it:You get an authentic Florida nature experience without committing to a huge wilderness excursion.

Good for: Hiking • Cycling • Birding • Kayaking • Nature lovers

Location: 1843 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey

One of the closest outdoor escapes to Siesta Key is also one visitors frequently drive past without realizing what's there.

Phillippi Estate Park sits just east of the Key on the banks of Phillippi Creek.

The 60-acre park combines green space, waterfront scenery and Sarasota history surrounding the historic Edson Keith Mansion.

It's especially nice when you want something low-key — a walk, picnic or quiet break from a packed vacation schedule.

If you're visiting between October and April, the park also hosts the Phillippi Farmhouse Market on Wednesdays, with produce, prepared foods, artisan vendors and live music.

Why we love it:It's convenient to Siesta Key and doesn't require an entire day.

Good for: Picnics • Easy walks • Families • History • Relaxing mornings

Location: 5500 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota

Bay Preserve at Osprey

For something quieter and far less touristy, put Bay Preserve at Osprey on your list.

This small waterfront preserve along Little Sarasota Bay combines beautiful grounds with a historic waterfront home, native landscaping, a nature trail, wildlife viewing areas and kayak access.

It's the kind of place you might never discover unless someone local told you about it.

Why we love it:Peaceful Old Florida atmosphere and beautiful bayfront views without the crowds.

Good for: Couples & Weddings • Quiet walks • Kayaking • Sunset • Photography

Location: 400 Palmetto Drive, Osprey

For an entirely different kind of wildlife experience, visit Big Cat Habitat & Gulf Coast Sanctuary in Sarasota.

This local wildlife facility is home to big cats and other animals and focuses on animal care, conservation and wildlife education. Its conservation program emphasizes species preservation, public education and animal well-being.

It's a particularly good option for families looking to add an animal experience to their Siesta Key vacation — and it's easy to combine with another attraction on the east side of Sarasota.

Unlike a traditional zoo, the experience has the feel of a smaller wildlife sanctuary, allowing visitors to spend time learning about the animals and the people who care for them.

Why we love it: It's an unexpected Sarasota experience and a fun break from beaches and gardens.

Great for: Families • Animal lovers • Kids • Wildlife photography

Location: 7101 Palmer Boulevard, Sarasota

At the time of this guide, Big Cat Habitat is open Friday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., so this is one attraction where you'll definitely want to check the current schedule before going.

Kayak bow on a calm mangrove creek, with tangled roots arching over brown water and green leaves reflected in sunlight.

This may be one of the coolest outdoor experiences near Siesta Key — and it's very different from spending the day on the beach.

At Ted Sperling Park near South Lido, kayakers and paddleboarders can make their way into a maze of mangrove tunnels where branches and roots form a natural canopy overhead.

Once you're inside, the busy Sarasota waterfront suddenly feels miles away.

The calm protected waterways make this an especially fun way to experience Sarasota's coastal ecosystem. Depending on the day and season, paddlers may encounter coastal birds and other marine wildlife along the way.

You can explore independently if you're comfortable paddling or book one of the many guided kayak and paddleboard tours that operate in the area.

Why we love it: Few experiences capture coastal Florida quite like paddling beneath a tunnel of living mangroves.

Great for: Kayaking • Paddleboarding • Couples • Families • Wildlife • Adventure

Location: 190 Taft Drive, Sarasota/Lido Key

Take a Siesta Key Tip: Go earlier in the day when temperatures are cooler, and consider a guided trip if you've never paddled through mangrove tunnels before.

There's More to Sarasota Than the Beach

We love the beach as much as anyone — but some of the best memories from a Siesta Key vacation happen when you explore a little farther.

One morning you can walk barefoot across the white sand of Siesta Beach, and that afternoon you can be standing beneath tropical orchids, hand-feeding a flamingo, looking for alligators along the Myakka River or walking through a quiet preserve beneath moss-covered live oaks.

That's part of what makes this area special.

Stay for the beach. Explore everything around it.
